SMEs require 'easy' IT security

Johannesburg, 21 Oct 2005

Symantec has launched its 2006 Norton product suite that offers protection and Internet security, with minimal user interaction. The solution is targeted at small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and home users.

The launch took place at the De Wildt Cheetah Rehabilitation Centre in Magaliesburg yesterday.

The complex IT threats of today require comprehensive protection, said Stefan Osthaus, Symantec's senior marketing director for consumer and small business in the EMEA region.

The consumer security market requires vendors to think beyond themselves and consider the consumers' needs, said Osthaus.

"Security has to be relevant to the user. Between 30% and 40% of consumers who go online are not protected."

Fear of falling victim to online threats could result in consumers changing their online behaviour and refraining from using services like online banking, he said.

Many SMEs and home users are not tech-savvy, he said, adding that the best way to encourage the use of security products was, therefore, to make them easy to use.

The new products offer consumers the freedom to do their daily tasks without worrying about security, said Osthaus.

The product set includes Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiVirus, Norton Personal Firewall, Norton SystemWorks and Norton Ghost.

Norton SystemWorks is a multi-purpose solution that recovers , while Norton Ghost offers a system recovery function that automatically backs up and recovers from the PC.

"The Norton Ghost system does not require the user to search for the right files and folders for backup, it automatically captures the contents of the entire drive," said Osthaus.

The products' real benefits for the consumer are that they can create documents, restore data from system failures, retrieve accidentally deleted files and download programme files and music with ease, said Osthaus.

The products are available from selected stores, the price of each package starting at R300.
