Local SmoothWall distributor Jeshurun Consulting has announced the launch of the international security vendor's first Unified Threat Management (UTM) Appliance for businesses in South Africa.
First previewed at the RSA 2007 conference in San Francisco in February, the Smoothguard 1000-UTM Appliance is based on the latest Intel CoreT 2 Duo and PCI Express technology and delivers a complete UTM solution in a single, powerful, state-of-the-art appliance.
Dion Britz, Technical Director of Jeshurun Consulting, says; "With ever increasing dependence on the Internet, businesses can no longer simply rely on a standard firewall device for defence.
"Statistics have shown that security attacks have become significantly more varied as well as complex in nature. The impact can be devastating in the event of a successful breach. It is imperative to meet this onslaught head-on with a sophisticated amalgam of security technologies, as found within the SmoothGuard security appliance - essentially a fistful of business security tools in a convenient appliance format."
The SmoothGuard 1000-UTM is far more powerful than any other UTM/firewall in its price range, comprising software that is a combination of several existing SmoothWall products. The result is a host of security tools which can be split into four main areas:
* Firewall: Stateful packet inspection with Layer 7 analysis, Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDS/IDP).
* VPN Gateway: Clientless Secure Remote Access for mobile users and site-to-site VPN connections.
* Web Security: Content filtering, anti-virus, anti-spyware and browser exploit detection.
* E-mail Security: Anti-spam, anti-virus, mail relay and control.
The powerful hardware allows the processor and system-intensive Web and e-mail content analysis functions to be performed on-box, rather than compromising effectiveness by using less demanding off-box solutions.
In addition to the raw CoreT 2 Duo processing power, the SmoothGuard 1000-UTM features 7 Gigabit Ethernet ports, which crucially are all connected via PCI Express bus. Over 900Mbps port-to-port firewall performance is the result. Most UTMs are still based on the old PCI bus that will be virtually saturated by a single gigabit port. PCI Express allows the SmoothGuard 1000-UTM to function as internal firewall operating at near gigabit wire-speed.
Richard Moore, VP Sales at SmoothWall, concludes: "The consensus of market analyst opinion is that the security appliance market is growing at a faster rate than for software solutions. We believe that together with market leading margins, SmoothWall can offer our partners an excellent financial opportunity with the SmoothGuard 1000-UTM Appliance."
