ITWeb launches journalism bursary; winner guaranteed journalist job in a leading technology media company.
Johannesburg, 27 Aug 2008

ITWeb, the business technology media company, is offering a third-year journalism student an opportunity to get experience and training in the media industry along with a fully paid-up fourth year bursary.

Launched this year, the ITWeb Journalism Bursary is being offered to the students of Rhodes School of Journalism & Media Studies.

ITWeb dominates the technology media space across online, print and events, and its main news and information site is accessed by 80 000 unique readers a month.

The student who is awarded the bursary will intern at ITWeb during their final year vacation periods. After the fourth year of studies has been completed, the beneficiary will secure a one-year contract, working at ITWeb's online newsroom as a new media journalist.

Ranka Jovanovic, ITWeb's editorial director, says: "This bursary is the perfect package for a talented young journalist to get ahead in the industry by gaining experience in a dynamic online news environment. The successful candidate will be adding to our talent pool, while at the same time receiving an industry-recognised qualification from the Rhodes School of Journalism and Media Studies."

"The cost of a specialisation year is often prohibitive, especially for top undergraduates from previously disadvantaged communities," said Jude Mathurine, lecturer and co-ordinator for New Media at the Rhodes School of Journalism and Media Studies. "ITWeb's Journalism bursary offers one worthy candidate the opportunity to learn the ropes at South Africa's oldest programme for digital journalism, while sharpening their abilities through ITWeb's internship programme."

The journalism bursary is open to third-year students who have received over 65% in all Journalism and Media Studies examinations, and live in the Johannesburg/Pretoria area. Candidates must be prepared to intern in their vacation periods during 2009 and work for ITWeb for one year following the year of study.
