Sober-N tops May virus chart

The Sober-N virus, which plagued computer users last month, has been tagged the top virus in May by local Sophos distributor Netxactics.

However, Alexander Gostov, a senior virus analyst at Kaspersky Lab, didn`t register Sober-N in the top 20 and had the Mytob-C variant as number one.

"Sober-N stormed to the top of the chart in early May, making it one of the biggest outbreaks so far this year," says Netxactics CEO Brett Myroff.

The virus registered 43.8% of Sophos virus reports.

The bilingual virus, which poses as a promise of tickets for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, was detected at the beginning of May and rapidly spread across 40 countries, accounting for 4.5% of all e-mail at its peak, adds Myroff.

Other new virus entries in May were Mytob-AZ, Mytob-E and Netsky-N, which featured in the top 10.

Mytob-AZ, despite accounting for only 1.6% of viruses in May, is a concern due to the severe damage it causes, says Myroff.

Zafi-D, Netsky-P, Netsky-D, Zafi-B, Mytob-Z and Mytob-E all featured in the Sophos top 10.

In May, 2.62% of e-mails or one in every 38 were viral, says Myroff.
