A four-man team of developers from S3 Solutions scooped the grand prize of R50 000 in the first-ever Vodacom 'Dawn of the Living Widgets' competition, held at Vodaworld on Saturday.

The winning widget, created in a marathon six-hour session, is a 2010 Soccer World Cup widget which counts down the days and hours left until the kick-off of the first World Cup soccer match next year.

The 'Dawn of the Living Widgets' competition and workshop was initiated to get developers more involved in creating local content for mobile phones using the Betavine, an open development platform, according to Romeo Kumalo, executive director for commercial business at Vodacom.

The first runner up, Werner Pieterson, won an Xbox for his widget 'Flogger', which aggregates all the information from a driver's journey and assists them in managing their car travel log.

Second runner up, Mark Pearl, received an HTC smartphone for his 'Guess the number' widget.
