Social media can improve efficiency and quality of output in the workplace, for those who use it effectively.
This is according to Greg Comline, senior manager at Deloitte.
“We have seen numerous examples of this efficiency across businesses,” he says. “However, it is important to monitor and mitigate a variety of risks.”
An increasingly mobile workforce is pushing IT consumerisation within the corporate environment, he says, which requires enhanced security and systems that control the availability of information in an 'always-on' environment.
He advises companies to have policies and procedures in place, complemented by a set of guidelines that is owned and enforced by the social media community.
“It is important to push as much responsibility as possible onto individuals to act in the right way in the corporate and private capacity,” he says.
In order to establish how social media is currently being used in the South African corporate space, Deloitte and ITWeb are running a Social Media Trends survey.
Deloitte, which has already noted an increase in the use of LinkedIn and Twitter in the business community over the past few months, expects the results of the survey to reveal the degree to which the business community uses social media.
It also hopes to glean information about how corporate social media initiatives are aligned with the business' strategic goals, how the results of these initiatives are measured, and how they tie back to delivering on strategic business objectives.
“We hope to see an improvement from last year for the strategic alignment of social media, and improved analysis of the results from social media activities,” says Comline.
He expects the results to show a shift in ownership of social media, from residing solely in the marketing environment, to increased involvement from leadership.
The survey will run until Monday, 21 November. Click here to take part, and stand a chance of winning one of two Sony Bloggies.
