Software AG releases Adabas for AS/400

Johannesburg, 21 May 1998

With the new release of Adabas 6.2 for AS/400, Software AG emphasizes its commitment to the AS/400 platform from its technology partner, IBM. The release was ported from the MVS version, using a semi-automatic conversion engine specifically developed by Software AG for the AS/400 environment. This unique technology assures a very high degree of compatibility between the AS/400 and the mainframe version of Adabas. Adabas is Software AG`s high-performance database for OLTP applications (OLTP: Online Transaction Processing), which have high data throughput and large concurrent user volumes. Adabas, with a worldwide user base of more than 5,000 companies, is one of today`s most used database systems on mainframe computers. Adabas runs not only on the AS/400, but also on the mainframe platforms OS/390, VSE and VM from IBM and BS2000 from SNI, as well as on numerous Unix platforms, Windows NT and OpenVMS from Digital. "By supporting AS/400 we not only strengthen our strategic alliance with our technology partner IBM, we also reemphasize our unique cross-platform capabilities," states Chris Horak, Vice President Product Marketing of Software AG in Darmstadt, Germany, during his recent visit to South Africa. It is estimated that there are 400,000 IBM AS/400 systems in use around the world, making the AS/400 one of the most successful platforms for users who require secure and robust systems. "The AS/400 market is very important to Software AG," says Horak, "because AS/400 enjoys a large market share with mid-sized companies, and a good number of large enterprises are also using this platform in addition to their mainframes. The AS/400 products complement Software AG`s offerings for system integration projects specifically for these businesses." The release of ADABAS on AS/400 enables the release of Predict, Software AG`s Data Dictionary, as well as Natural Construct, SAG`s Application Generation tool on the AS/400 platform. These productivity tools enhance Natural, SAG`s fourth generation language, that has been available on the AS/400 for some years already. "The Software AG development and deployment environment is now complete on the AS/400", says Schalk Viljoen, Software AG Business Unit Manager at SPL.
