Software AG the first to support Google Maps with AJAX technology

Johannesburg, 18 Nov 2005

South African companies and software developers eager to build powerful interactive applications around Google Maps can do so right now via the seamless JavaScript (AJAX)-based control which ships with the Composite Application Integrator (CAI) from Software AG.

CAI, a function-rich design and runtime environment for combining Web services into rich composite Internet applications, is the first AJAX product to include a Google Maps control.

Its availability means organisations developing composite applications can now rapidly use services from Google Maps, integrate existing applications and exchange information with Google Maps, thereby significantly reducing time to market.

"Seamless interaction with Google Maps is only one of more than 80 AJAX UI controls shipped with CAI," says Devon Dalbock, Sales Director of Software AG Southern Africa. "With these tools, organisations can build composite, rich applications with incredible speed. Software AG's policy of establishing an open collaborative community to create a comprehensive library of innovative controls means even richer functionality is available within weeks of the launch of new services such as Google Maps."

CAI allows developers and architects to integrate existing applications and create new user interfaces, significantly reducing the effort needed to implement a service-oriented architecture. Applications developed using any software tools, including Java, Natural and Cobol, once available as a Web service can be combined across the Web into a single, intelligent, browser-based user interface. This presents the user with all the functionality of a rich client.

Dalbock notes that once applications are designed and tested, they can be rapidly deployed on a broad range of Java run-time environments including major application servers and Tomcat. Each application can be immediately accessed through a browser or as a rich client (Java SWT client). Rich applications can also be integrated with portals such as IBM WebSphere and SAP NetWeaver. Unlike traditional rich clients, all interface changes are communicated by the server to the Java client through XML streams.

"CAI accelerates and simplifies the design and deployment of rich Internet applications by providing a developer-friendly WYSIWYG environment that doesn't require skills in HTML, AJAX or CSS," Dalbock continues. "Desktop-like capabilities can now be enabled for the browser without the need to code complex JavaScript."
