Software AG's Adabas first database to utilise IBM's new 64-bit Virtual Storage architecture for mainframe

Johannesburg, 26 Sep 2001

Software AG is the first company worldwide to offer a database, which can utilise IBM's new 64-bit Virtual Storage architecture. The German-based software vendor enhanced its Adabas for the 64-bit virtual world.

The enterprise transaction database management system will be the first database for business-critical applications to exploit 64-bit Virtual Storage under the latest version of the operating system for the IBM's eServer z900 mainframe, z/OS. IBM's z/OS Version 1.2 marks the release of the first stage in 64-bit Virtual Storage technology.

With this move, Adabas offers support for the newest hardware generation from IBM - the z/900 enterprise mainframe servers. With the z/900 servers, customers can integrate company data and transactions and make them available for business processes in the extremely fast-paced world of electronic business, using industry-leading security, reliability and availability.

The z/OS 1.2 operating system will give companies their first opportunity to benefit from the advantages of the new 64-bit Virtual Storage system in a mainframe environment. Users now have access to more than 16 million terabytes of virtual address space. Intelligent use of this increased user address space means that, for example, memory-intensive applications can load and process a substantially greater amount of data in their memory.

The Adabas database management system is well known for its high availability and rapid response times. Making use of virtual 64-bit addressing for the Adabas cache will provide even better response times for business-critical applications.

Software AG will continue its collaboration with IBM with the goal of offering further 64-bit technology enhancements to customers.

Specialists from Software AG and IBM, working together, have successfully tested the database in the new environment. "Deploying Adabas on our systems has made it possible to test our 64-bit Virtual Storage concept in a real-world environment and prove its robustness," said Heather Kahan, Director, IBM zSeries Software. "This successful deployment of Adabas on z/OS is yet another proof-point for the quality of our design."

Software AG is shipping the new functionality concurrent with the general availability of the new version of IBM's z/OS. "Our mutual customers will benefit from our good collaboration with IBM's z/OS developers. This has resulted in our being able to provide support for the newest IBM technologies directly after their release," declared Peter Mossack, Vice President, Research and Development at Software AG. "Our Adabas customers will be able to take advantage of the new 64-bit support as soon as they install z/OS Version 1.2."
