Software Futures top Rational distributor twice in a row

Johannesburg, 21 Aug 2003

Software Futures has been named Best Worldwide Distributor for IBM Rational Software for the second year in a row.

"Achieving this was a coup for a South African company competing against 50 distributors from the EMEA, Asia Pacific and South American regions," says Trevor van Rensburg, development best practices business unit manager at Software Futures. "It proves, yet again, that local IT companies can successfully compete with the best the world has to offer."

IBM Rational Software provides a software development platform that improves the speed, quality and predictability of software projects. This integrated, full lifecycle solution combines software engineering best practices, tools and professional services.

The award was presented to Software Futures as the Rational distributor that contributed the highest revenue to Rational in the previous year. The performance of distributors is rated on a combination of revenue and growth; this is the first time a distributor has won the award for two consecutive years.

SA used to form part of the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe, Middle East and African region in Rational Software, but following the acquisition of Rational by IBM, the regions have been restructured and SA has now been transferred to the north region of the IBM Software Group, with its headquarters in the UK.

"A number of large organisations in SA, including financial, telco and IT companies, have standardised on IBM Rational's tools," Van Rensburg notes. "Many local software developers are adopting worldwide best-practice methodologies and tools to deliver projects on time, in budget and to specification."

The ongoing skills shortage is a critical factor in local software development projects, and the use of an automated development platform reduces companies' dependency on scarce, costly skills. It allows companies to adapt quickly and elegantly to change, a crucial aspect in the development market.
