Sony plans to begin an electronic money service on the Internet in 2000, according to Nikkei.
Nikkei`s Tuesday edition, citing unnamed sources, said cards similar to debit or smart-cash cards and special reading devices will be provided to customers. Users will connect to Sony`s Internet service, So-net, via a PC and make purchases by passing the cards through the readers.
Sony plans to recruit between 200 and 300 families to test the system in summer 2000 and hopes to commercialise it late in 2000, Nikkei reported.
According to Nikkei, Sony Finance International will be in charge of transaction settlements.
