South African ICT entrepreneur is top contender for Endeavor international business accelerator model

Johannesburg, 21 Jan 2005

Blue Square Technologies is the first South African ICT enterprise to make it through to the final selection for an Endeavor South Africa Entrepreneur. The company specialises in the design and development of easy to use wireless connectivity solutions for OEMs, delivering wireless networking solutions that enable PCs, PDAs, access points, mobile phones, car-radios and headsets with Bluetooth wireless technology.

Six companies within the Gauteng-based Innovation Hub were identified as possessing the potential for the South African model of the project. This seeks out truly innovative products and services that are transforming industry and show strong potential for growth regionally, nationally or globally.

Based in the US, the Endeavor Entrepreneur programme operates in countries identified as 'emerging markets', including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay and now SA. It is described as "a movement to unleash the entrepreneurial spirit in all corners of the globe", and the local model is a first in Africa.

The selection process and entry criteria for each company are very rigorous and selection takes place in five stages over a six-month period. The benefits for businesses being selected as an Endeavor Entrepreneur are huge. These companies gain access to the best international expertise, including interaction with top US business schools. The World Bank has officially recognised Endeavor as the best approach to build the economy in developing countries by assisting high potential entrepreneurs in Sub Saharan Africa to grow their businesses.

The Endeavor South Africa executive committee and board include South African captains of industry and representatives of international companies based in SA.

Blue Square Technologies has now advanced to the final stage of this non-profit, high impact business growth accelerator for enterprises. Managing Director Charl van der Merwe is naturally excited by the possibilities offered by the Endeavor programme, commenting that it was a great honour to be selected. He will face a panel of international and local business experts for the final selection early in the New Year.
