South African methodologies exported to Brazil

Johannesburg, 24 Jul 2003

The Dex IT-group has just completed a pilot project and has gone live with a new Java-based multi-user system in Brazil. The system is built on new technologies while utilising the design methodologies DexData Technologies has mastered over the last 20 years, conducting business in the insurance and IT industries.

The new system branded as DexTotal, consists of an integrated set of applications for the healthcare, short-term and life insurance industries. The modules include business processes such as client administration, policy administration, financial administration, collections, management information and product development.

"Our operation in SA leads the field in many areas of information technology in the insurance industry. Local talent and technological developments were well received in Brazil," says Jans Wessels, managing director of DexData Technologies South Africa.

The cornerstone and origin of DexTotal is the e-Sure system, which is used in a big business volume environment in the local insurance industry and runs on IBM iSeries servers. Certain objects from this development in Brazil will be brought back to SA to form the base of future enhancements to its existing local product offerings.

"This will position Dex to provide solutions to the entire spectrum of technology bases commonly found at our clients, by making the Dex systems architectures more open. It further ensures that maximum benefit is achieved from the synergies that exist in this cross-Atlantic venture," adds Wessels.

DexData developed core components of the new system in Java to run in a three-tier environment. End-users will be able to access the system through a browser front-end across local area and wide area network connections as well as through the Internet. The new architecture`s "thin-client" design enables access where computers are fitted out with only essential software and applications. This helps to reduce overall cost of ownership and also eases deployment, upgrading and maintenance.

The new product will be compatible with most major operating systems and databases including Unix, Windows NT and 2000, SQL Server, and Access.

Says Wessels: "The new multi-tier architecture separates the user interface, business logic and database components of the application from one another. This enables cost-effective scalability and increases the ease with which front-end and business logic features can be customised to each client`s database needs. The system can be run from the small and medium-sized insurance firm right up to the largest operations with many branches and complex environments.

"In line with our strategy to ensure flexible systems that can be adapted to the needs of different clients, the new system will be rule-based. That means that business rules can easily be tailored according to the structure, business processes and products of each of our customers."

This design ensures time to market and development costs are cut dramatically by eliminating the need for long and complex development cycles ensuring maximum value to Dex`s clients.
