3Com Corporation has entered the Gigabit Ethernet-over-copper market with the release of new server network connections designed to meet demands for high-performance, reliability and manageability required in mission critical server applications.
Gary Boniface, 3Com SA Services Operation manager, says these new high bandwidth connectivity products offer a feature-rich yet radically simple way to significantly broaden bandwidth and increase network performance - by potentially as much as 100 times - using inexpensive Category 5 copper wiring.
"With 3Com Gigabit Ethernet Server NICs, users can significantly increase network performance in bandwidth-intensive applications, such as the Internet, e-business, Web hosting and video streaming, without sacrificing network reliability or breaking the bank," he says.
Bonniface says 3Com`s move underscores the market`s acceptance of Gigabit Ethernet over copper as the defacto technology for cost effectively improving system performance.
3Com`s Gigabit Ethernet network interface cards use the same cabling infrastructure as Fast Ethernet (CAT 5) for dramatically improved server response times and Internet connections - as much as ten times the speed improvement over 10/100 Fast Ethernet.
At Gigabit-per-second speed, these new network connections provide the fastest possible Ethernet LAN link for servers. The 64-bit 66MHz bus mastering PCI network interface cards support interrupt coalescing and onboard hardware acceleration for TCP/IP/UDP segmentation and checksum to free the server host processor for mission critical application tasks.
In addition, six DMA channels eliminate the PCI bus as a bottleneck and efficiently utilise available sever I/O bandwidth.
Best-in-Class Reliability for Lowest Total Cost of Ownership
The new 3Com EtherLink Server 10/100/1000 PCI NICs include 3Com`s DynamicAccess technology with advanced server features, which ensure that mission critical data centre, e-business, and transaction processing servers perform at their best and stay online. Specifically, each network card supports:
Bi-directional Load Balancing - maximises server performance by grouping multiple NICs into a single logical connection while efficiently balancing incoming and outgoing server traffic through any vendor`s standards-based switch.
Onboard Managed PC Boot Agent - lowers maintenance costs with remote network boot support, as well as ability to perform installations, upgrades, scans, and recovery before loading the server operating system.
Resilient Server Links - eliminate downtime by automatically linking moving traffic to back-up connections.
Self-Healing Drivers - monitor and automatically correct for error conditions in the network connection.
PCI Hot Plug Support - allows for maintenance and re-configuration while keeping the server up and running.
