Spescom, BT: Installing NTelite

Johannesburg, 16 May 2003

Spescom Limited (UK), the London-based operation of multi-national ICT technology innovator, Spescom, has announced the signing of an interoperability agreement with the Harris Corporation, a world leading supplier of line test and network management systems.

Spescom Limited (UK) specialises in the development of technology predominantly aimed at the access network environment for application by telecommunications operators and service providers in the global arena. This technology is already utilised in the European marketplace by British Telecoms (BT).

According to Spescom's UK Technical Director, Keith Richards, the conclusion of the agreement with Harris is significant in that it will make Spescom's NTelite product interoperable with Harris equipment, thereby broadening the market for this new technology.

Developed by Spescom, the NTelite is a new generation intelligent network termination device that replaces current line boxes within the home and enables operators to perform enhanced remote line testing.

"The NTelite is an enabling technology that facilitates the global Broadband revolution. We have a contract with BT to supply two million units over several years, 500 000 of which will be delivered by September 2003. We also operate a joint agreement with BT to market the product worldwide," says Richards.

Harris Corporation's Product Manager, Network Support Division, William Conroy, confirms that Spescom and Harris have a well established business relationship.

"The technology capabilities of Spescom are well known to Harris. The alliance between the two companies has a proven track record of success on the African continent.

"The NTelite is a cost reducing, field proven, network management tool. This latest agreement is good news for Harris line test system (LTS) customers as it provides them with accessibility to innovative world leading technology," says Conroy.

"With interoperability between our remote test units and the NTelite, test system users can readily determine whether service affecting loop problems are within the customer premises or not, improving technician despatch efficiency and reducing the cost of local loop maintenance."

Richards says Spescom is currently manufacturing in high volume at its facility in Scotland.

"Harris line test equipment is used to manage millions of the world's telephone lines and this alliance is a big step forward in unlocking the full business potential of this product," Richards concludes.
