Spescom launches eB MAPS anti-terror planning software

Johannesburg, 10 Jul 2003

Spescom Software Inc, the US operation of JSE-listed Spescom Limited, today launched eB MAPS, a geographic information system (GIS) enabled software solution designed to enable in the preparation of mitigation and response plans to terrorist attacks and natural disasters.

eB MAPS assists emergency managers and planners to identify all critical infrastructures and key assets under their jurisdiction and get access to related documents, records and data. The package also maintains details of organisations and people responsible for these assets allowing immediate communication. At a moment of crisis, decision-makers will have all relevant information at their fingertips.

Specsom's new solution was developed in response to the US Department of Homeland Security's National Strategy for the Physical Protection of Critical Infrastructures and Key Assets, issued in February 2003. This strategy calls on US state governments to "engender coordination of protective and emergency response activities", for which eB MAPS has been specifically designed.

Specscom will demonstrate eB MAPS at the 23 Annual ESRI International User Conference held in San Diego from 7 to 11 July.

Carl Mostert, Spescom Software's CEO, commented: "We are excited about eB MAPS as it addresses an important problem in the public safety market. This is in line with our strategy of developing specific solutions for our target markets based on our powerful eB platform. We also value our close working relationship with ESRI in defining this solution. "

eB MAPS is built on Spescom's eB collaborative document, configuration and records management and ESRI's ArcGIS platforms. This combination of technologies creates a powerful solution that leverages both the spatial mapping capabilities of Geographic Information System with the contextual document, record and asset data management capabilities of eB.

eB MAPS is further integrated with industry-leading office, e-mail and CAD applications and enables the secure capture, storage and management of all electronic and paper-based documents and content.

Based on the latest Microsoft .NET architecture and making extensive use of XML computer language for data sharing and integration with other applications, eB MAPS is an "out-of-the-box" solution that is rapidly deployable, scalable and flexible.
