Spescom Ltd., the UK subsidiary of South Africa's leading communications and information technology group, has entered into a contract with British Telecommunications plc (BT), one of the world's leading Network Operators to supply a Next Generation Network Device for facilitating the delivery of each new wave of communications products and services.
The contract, which is valued at just under R1.2bn, over the next three to five years, positions Spescom as a major supplier to BT. It also heralds the group's arrival as a global player in this sector of the market place.
The ever increasing requirement for voice, data, multimedia and Internet communication is placing massive demands for networks to carry increasing amounts of information. Despite huge investment in the network infrastructure, the last kilometre to a customer's door still relies on a pair of copper wires and a manually wired termination box within the home.
In order to allow BT to provide future services for their customers, Spescom will supply a highly innovative electronic version of the universally-applicable Network Termination device. The new device will enable remote engineering diagnostics eliminating one of the requirements for expensive on-site service calls and will also provide BT's customers with more choice and access to new services such as: Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Loop (ADSL) as they come on line.
