Spescom Media IT, the broadcasting operation of technology innovator Spescom, has supplied broadcast equipment valued at R15 million to Red Pepper Pictures.
According to Spescom Media IT general manager, Sean du Toit, Red Pepper, a long-standing customer, required complete equipment for two new studios in Linden, Johannesburg.
"We supplied Sony broadcast cameras on Vinten Pedestals, complete Leitch process equipment and Sony production switches," says Du Toit.
"One of the requirements was that the two studios should be capable of being merged into one large studio if the need arose. Consequently, the installation was configured to ensure that this can be effected with minimum downtime to the customer's business."
Du Toit adds that the solution was designed to facilitate an effortless upgrade to high definition broadcast.
"South Africa currently broadcasts in standard definition but internationally there is a major move towards the use of high definition which provides double the picture quality as that of standard."
Du Toit notes that plasma screens were also installed in the studio control rooms.
"These screens are divided into grids and are able to show multiple pictures, each representing a different aspect of production. Depending on which programme is being produced, operators can reconfigure the current system to utilise this revolutionary feature," concludes Du Toit.
