Spescom's Altris announces new Web application

Johannesburg, 13 Jul 2001

US-based Altris, a subsidiary of JSE-listed information and communications technology group Spescom, today announced its new Web application, eB GIS Connect for ArcIMS.

eB GIS was developed by Altris Software, a leading provider of e-business integrated solutions that deliver accurate information in context to customers, assets, products and processes.

eB GIS Connect, developed in partnership with several Altris customers and San Diego Data Processing Corporation, allows asset and supporting documentation to be viewed in conjunction with geographical data contained in maps. eB GIS Connect integrates Altris eB DM document management and eB DC configuration management with ESRI's ArcIMS 3.1 mapping system using the Altris eB SDK and ESRI's latest object-based toolkit and is already implemented at a number of customer sites, including SEMPRA Energy and UK-based Railtrack.

The application is designed for any popular Web browser using corporate intranets and over the Internet. The solution gives users the ability to identify relevant map data and link immediately to related asset information or find the map location for any asset stored in the eB repository with a simple mouse click.

GIS Connect is the result of 12 months research and development to provide an application that provide users with significant productivity benefits, improved customer service opportunities, and enhanced response times in case of safety or disaster-related incidents. By combining GIS Connect, CAD Connect and integration with a corporation's line-of-business system, Altris continues to address the needs of its customers in its core markets.

Bill Weber, CEO of Altris, said: "Our eB product goes from strength to strength as we extend its extremely flexible and versatile integration capabilities to add substantial value to existing applications such as ESRI's renowned and very powerful GIS product, ArcIMS. In today's IT economy, organisations in our target markets are increasingly focusing on adding value to systems already implemented and Altris is very well positioned to take advantage of that with the development of this new application. Certainly the response we have had from customers to eB GIS Connect has been extremely positive and reinforces this strategy."

ArcIMS sets the standard for fast and powerful Internet mapping and geographic information system (GIS) tools. ArcIMS is built on cutting-edge technology from ESRI - the first company to launch GIS on the World Wide Web. ArcIMS features an out-of-the-box solution for creating, designing and managing Internet sites that incorporate mapping and GIS capabilities.

The only software that enables users to integrate local data with Internet data in a simple browser interface, ArcIMS offers powerful GIS capabilities in an easy-to-use framework. ArcIMS supports serving data with maps (eg bit maps) or with intelligent vector streaming. In addition, ArcIMS facilitates access from multiple servers in your organisation or throughout the world. ArcIMS changes the way users can access and interact with Internet mapping and GIS data at their desktops.
