Spescom's US operation latest deal valued at over $1m

Johannesburg, 14 Nov 2002

Spescom Software Inc, the US arm of multi-national technology innovator Spescom Limited, today announced that UK rail management company, Railtrack, has purchased a program-wide software licence for the West Coast Route Modernisation programme.

The contract, valued in excess of $1 million, will see Railtrack acquiring all components of Spescom's eB integrated document, configuration and records management (iDCR) solutions suite for the West Coast Route Modernisation programme. This is regarded as Europe's largest infrastructure project.

The endeavour estimated to cost over $15 billion, involves upgrading Railtrack's West Coast Main Line, linking London with Glasgow and Edinburgh. The West Coast Line, Europe's busiest train route, is being improved with state-of-the-art signalling and train control systems to better support rapidly increasing traffic levels, and its renewal program is generating massive volumes of complex data and documents.

Railtrack is adopting the eB software suite to help control the huge volume of information being used by the alliance teams that are delivering more than 85 complex engineering projects as part of the upgrade. These alliance teams include leading enterprises, such as Westinghouse, Balfour Beatty and GEC Alsthom, among others.

Spescom CEO, Carl Mostert, stated: "Railtrack's decision to use eB is a great endorsement of our technology and the value that Spescom delivers to customers. We have been working closely with Railtrack for some time and have clearly demonstrated the return on investment of our solutions to them. This deal is one further milestone in our ongoing relationship with Railtrack. We plan to expand this relationship into other areas of Railtrack as more operating divisions are made aware of the benefits that are being derived by the West Coast project."

Railtrack will benefit from the provision of the Spescom eB Health & Safety File Plan solution. This is an application that will enable the Health & Safety File - an essential deliverable for any UK-based construction project - to be compiled and assembled automatically as documents, drawings and records are created. Documents and records required to successfully complete project handover will be available the moment they are needed, avoiding unnecessary delays that often accompany the conclusion of a project. In addition, the Health & Safety File contains the as-built configuration details necessary for the railway line to achieve operational status.

The eB application will also streamline the Change Management Process between Railtrack and its alliance partners, who are the principal delivery agents across the program. In addition, the powerful Document Control functions of eB, which include comprehensive document reservation and transmittal capabilities, are being used to support controlled distribution of information among many different contractors and suppliers.
