JSE-listed ICT group, Spescom Limited, today confirmed that it was the successful bidder for an advanced information management system for testing and monitoring to be used throughout Telkom's network of services.
The contract value is in excess of R250 million and will be implemented and executed within a two-year period.
This is the first and most advanced system of its kind to be deployed anywhere in the world. The system is comprised of a single platform for the complete testing of Telkom's complex copper network, up to and including, the consumer.
It will permit Telkom to remotely identify and correct any fault on its voice or data services and provide customers with a speedy response regardless of location on the network.
The cost-effectiveness of the solution is exceptional due to the capability for remote and automatic diagnostic testing. This in turn reduces downtime and the use of traditional maintenance call-outs. The system also caters for the monitoring of quality of service as well as for future services that may be required.
The solution will boost Telkom's customer-focused approach. It will provide the ability to offer world-class services using the latest leading technology involving remote diagnostic and future broadband roll-outs including ADSL and other services. This contract is a new generation solution for Telkom services.
With the exception of certain proprietary technologies obtained from leading multi-national organisations such as Harris, ADC and Schlumberger-Sema, the solution is based on a local software and network management architecture and design.
Spescom was hailed as the only South African company capable of providing a comprehensive and cost-effective solution as well as one of the few companies in the world with the necessary integrated skills, in-house, plus the ability to bring in the right partners.
Spescom's position as a market leader in this area is substantiated by its traditional business, current contracts and the high profile deal announced last year for the provision of a network termination device to BT. This is an intelligent unit that is used to pre-qualify ADSL roll-outs and assist BT with diagnostics in its networks.
The group has provided and enhanced a voice testing system for Telkom for over seven years and has provided solutions for Telkom's current diagnostic and fault location systems.
It is hoped to realise the full potential for the system through a joint marketing agreement between Spescom and Telkom that will see the product launched onto the world telecommunications stage. This market sector is acknowledged as a very important aspect of Spescom's future business.
