SPI announces version 2.3.6 of Privileged User Manager

Johannesburg, 02 Aug 2010

SPI, the African distributor for utility software products and services to the Open Systems segment of the IT industry, today announced the availability of version 2.3.6 of Applecross Technologies' Privileged User Manager (PUM) software.

PUM provides users with the first, commercial-strength privileged account (super user) monitoring, management and auditing package for UNIX and Linux-based systems that is available at no greater a cost than a supported version of an open source alternative.

PUM allows end-user organisations to centrally manage, monitor and audit the use of super user accounts, providing an indelible audit trail of all activity. The new version of the Web browser based PUM software adds improved terminal handling, support for third party SSH clients, and enhanced scalability and reliability.

In particular, PUM V2.3.6 now provides organisations with the option of defining an unrestricted shell, which does not limit trusted systems administrators in any way.

"We found that most of our customers were happy to trust their in-house systems administrators to use any combination of commands, provided that PUM audited everything that was invoked,” commented Neil Chaney, CEO of Applecross Technologies. “The new unrestricted shell option allows an organisation to put zero restrictions on selected, trusted systems administrators, while comprehensively recording everything that is performed. This is true whether they are using the PUMClient Web browser based user interface or their own SSH client."

The PUMClient Web browser based user interface used by many systems administrators due to its capacity to manage multiple systems concurrently, has also been extended to provide a resizable terminal window. In addition, PUM's scalability and reliability have also been improved.

“As PUM is adopted by larger and larger organisations to manage estates measured in the many thousands of systems, supporting hundreds of concurrent systems administrators, we have to make sure that response times, auditing capabilities and resilience are maintained,” continued Chaney. “PUM v2.3.6 increases resilience and allows for a significantly greater workload to be processed. PUM V2.3.6 offers even the largest end-users a secure platform for managing, monitoring and auditing its super users, who can continue to work just as if PUM was not installed.”
