Open Systems Management Ltd (OSM) has appointed the SPI Group (SPI) as its distributor for southern Africa. SPI develops and markets utility software products to the open systems segment of the information technology industry.
OSM is an independent software vendor from the UK, with offices in Australia and the US. The company specialises in the design, development and international distribution of systems, security and operations management software for medium to large enterprises that use Unix, Linux and Windows operating systems.
Chris Anderson, managing director of SPI, is excited about the possibilities the OSM products offer the local market. "OSM's suite of software products integrate with programs such as SAP R/3. Their design enables these multiple, networked systems to be managed from a single point."
SPI will be introducing COSbatch, COSduty and COSprint. "These product suites, used individually or as an integrated unit, will benefit efficiency, control and provide greater availability to the management of networks," explains Anderson. "These are highly certified and acceptable products."
Designed to suit the policy-led requirements of medium to large enterprise users, the applications' structure and enabling technology allows for low-cost extensions and customisation. The software therefore facilitates business process-led systems management.
COSprint is an output management and print spooling system, capable of being harnessed to the SAP R/3 Output Management System. COSbatch facilitates job scheduling and production automation, including to the SAP R/3 Background Processing service. COSduty is an operations automation and workflow management system.
COSprint provides functions to submit, query and cancel print jobs as well as to poll and query the status of print queues and devices. It can supplement the native spooling capabilities of the SAP R/3 system by increasing the manageability and control of the output production environment. When used with SAP R/3 it receives print jobs from the SAP R/3 spool system and sends back status information. The level of detail is customised from within COSprint for R/3 but depends on which version of SAP R/3 is in use.
COSbatch is a widely used production automation and job scheduling product. It raises the standard of job scheduling facilities available to SAP R/3 users to the level of most other functions within this leading ERP package. Enterprises are able to use a single batch job scheduling service to automate the workload to the extent of being able to mix jobs for the different environments into the same suites and job streams. Benefits include a secure and finely controllable service.
COSduty enables IT management to enforce best practice and policy across all supported computer systems by using a common graphical user interface for common routines.
Once encapsulated, routines are delegated as duties to other relatively unskilled personnel to carry out. The benefits include reduced cost, improved service levels, full auditing, improved security, increased accountability and a reduction in dependency on skilled individuals.
COSprint, COSbatch and COSduty are all customisable as a consequence of using the OSM Toolset Technology.
