Online bidders snapped up nine cricket suites to watch the recent SA-Australia one-day internationals, paying more than R70 000 in what is being billed as the first such Internet auction in SA.
The Lot Web Auctions, M-Web`s auction initiative, auctioned the cricket suites in Durban and Cape Town on behalf of the KwaZulu-Natal and Western Province Cricket Unions.
The two cricket unions raised R72 281 from the sale of tickets for seven suites at Kingsmead and two at Newlands.
"Tickets for sporting events are 'perishable` items, worthless after the event," says The Lot marketing director Michael Bouchier. "Online auctions are proving an ideal channel for matching sellers and buyers of seats that could otherwise have been left unfilled."
The suites were marketed on television and online.
"Bidding was brisk as soon as the auctions went live and interest remained strong," Bouchier adds. "All the suites offered were successfully sold, some at a 60% premium to their face value."
The promotion was done in conjunction with Clive Rice, SuperSport and MegaPro. The team plans to combine forces again to auction suites on behalf of rugby unions and soccer clubs in conjunction with The Lot.
The Lot Web Auctions was launched in September 1999 and was bought by M-Web in December.
