SpringSource releases development tool

Days after being purchased by VMware, open source Java specialist SpringSource is expanding into the enterprise cloud-deployment business using a recent acquisition of its own, reports The Register.

SpringSource has sprung a service into beta for Java developers making apps in the cloud, called SpringSource Cloud Foundry.

The platform is built on the open source Cloud Tools project currently used for Java enterprise applications on Amazon EC2.

TMC to provide tech assistance

The rice-milling, rubber-production and chicken-raising industries in Thailand are being targeted for new technology assistance by the Technology Management Centre (TMC)'s Industrial Technology Assistance Programme (iTAP), according to The Nation.

Under what is called the 'iTAP Big Impact' scheme, TMC plans to offer its services and funding subsidies to help greater numbers of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the three flagship industries.

TMC's director Chatchanart Theptharanon says the ambitious move aimed to help the many SMEs involved in the three vitally important industries to adopt technologies to improve their productivity and save energy.

Navigating healthcare IT hurdles

The federal government's big health IT push is expected to lead many more practices to adopt electronic health records. But if history is any guide, the push also could lead to more practices ripping the systems out in frustration, writes AMNews.

Studies show that up to 30% of practices stop using their systems or even remove them within one year of installation, and experts say there's no doubt that small practices have a harder time adapting to a newly wired practices than do their larger counterparts.

But the experts also see some mistakes, most of which are preventable being repeated. There are efforts under way to help ensure that practices that dip in the technology waters don't drown.
