Sybase's mobile and wireless subsidiary iAnywhere Solutions has launched SQL Anywhere Studio 8, the next generation of its enterprise data management and synchronisation solution. The new version is optimised for larger scale mobile, embedded and workgroup deployments, and features major performance, security and developer enhancements.
"Key product attributes in the embedded database space include self-management and zero administration, ensuring that the end-user need not have any in-house database expertise," says Deon Engelbrecht, business development manager for iAnywhere. "The performance and usability enhancements in SQL Anywhere Studio 8 strongly position iAnywhere Solutions to meet these needs."
Engelbrecht says users of iAnywhere's technology range from remote office workers to field technicians to embedded database application vendors. These companies are dealing with increasing amounts of data and share a need for out-of-the-box enterprise-class database functionality that is both easy-to-use and delivers superior performance.
"SQL Anywhere Studio 8 is designed to handle these larger databases, more complex queries, and larger workgroup environments while continuing to provide unparalleled ease-of-use."
Key features of the new release include improved query processing and optimisation which can make complex queries up to six times faster, new advanced index type for efficient large key indexing, bitmap table page lists which enable faster table scans, and enhanced enterprise synchronisation which extends enterprise information to mobile and wireless devices.
Other new features include:
* Introduction of priority synchronisation which enables independent control over the synchronisation of different data subsets. This also enables developers to maximise available communications bandwidth, which is particularly important for wireless or low bandwidth environments.
* Use of Java synchronisation logic increases flexibility, easing integration with diverse backend systems.
* End-to-end security from the enterprise to the local device to meet the exceptional privacy requirements of industries such as healthcare and financial services.
* Strong local data encryption and authentication requirements to protect information even if the device is lost or stolen.
* Enhanced communication-stream encryption secures communications between the server and the client device, protecting both the employee and the enterprise from unauthorised access to sensitive data.
* New graphical query plan display makes analysis of query access plans more intuitive, enabling developers to easily measure and optimise performance.
* Automatically generated synchronisation scripts ease programming and reduce the time to market for development of new applications.
The IDC reports that iAnywhere Solutions gained the most market share in 2000 of the companies in the embedded database category. According to Gartner Dataquest, iAnywhere Solutions increased its five-year dominance of the mobile database market by seven share points, reaching a 68% share in 2001. In addition, more than 600 application partners embed the technology as a part of their software packages for resale, including sales force automation, field service, customer relationship management and enterprise portal solutions.
