SQL Anywhere Studio 9 includes support for XML, Web services

Sybase Mobile, a division of Sybase South Africa, has announced the general availability of SQL Anywhere Studio 9, the next generation of its data management and enterprise synchronisation solution for anytime, anywhere access to corporate information.

Expanded platform and standards support, advances in scalability and performance, and developer productivity enhancements optimise SQL Anywhere Studio for database-powered mobile, embedded and Web-based applications, as well as solutions for small to medium-size businesses.

"Building on the features designed for mobile users, SQL Anywhere Studio 9 introduces new capabilities such as support for XML, Web services, server initiated synchronisation, .NET and Mac OS X," says Tahzier Isaacs, marketing manager, Sybase SA. "In addition, the new version's performance and usability enhancements enable our partners to develop sophisticated solutions for small to medium-sized businesses that are easy to use and leverage the power of an enterprise class database."

New features in SQL Anywhere Studio 9 include:

* XML import and export capabilities, SQLX functionality, new HTTP server and SOAP support enable the creation of database-powered Web services.

* Expanded support for the .NET Framework and .NET Compact Framework for mobile devices allows .NET developers to leverage their existing development tool expertise.

* Support for Mac OS X and 64-bit Itanium platforms extend the appeal of SQL Anywhere Studio to new communities of developers.

* Index Consultant provides administrators with an easy to use way of optimising performance by guiding them through the selection of appropriate indexes.

* Innovative new query processing algorithms enable many complex queries to run in a fraction of the time of previous releases. Cache management system improves concurrency and scalability for environments with hundreds of simultaneous users. Server-initiated synchronisation, faster synchronisation speeds and other new synchronisation options provide developers with greater flexibility in designing effective enterprise applications for deployment in wired, public wireless and WiFi environments.

* Introduction of UltraLite Dynamic SQL for mobile devices eases development for SQL programmers looking to create dynamic data-driven applications.

* Support for advanced SQL functionality including OLAP features, such as ROLLUP and RECURSIVE UNION queries, enables developers to create richer applications.

* Enhanced graphical administration tools - including a query editor, integrated stored procedure debugger, profiler, and synchronisation monitoring tool - give developers faster access to information.

Windows versions of the product will become available in Q3 2003. Mac OS X and Unix versions, including Linux, will become generally available in Q4 2003.
