Square One offers tailor-made coding system for paper reels

Johannesburg, 26 Jun 2008

A new direct in-line industrial printing solution for the massive reels of paper and board manufactured by the forest products industry in South Africa, has been introduced by the Industrial Solutions division of the JSE-listed Square One Solutions Group.

The sole South African distributor for Domino Printing Sciences plc, a global inkjet and laser solutions provider, Square One supplies and supports local industry with coding, marking and labelling solutions for a wide variety of goods packaged in various materials, including cardboard, plastics and glass.

Ted Michel, Industrial Solutions director at Square One, said the C6000V and C6000i printers within Domino's C-Series Plus range, provide particularly good resolution "belt or belly" direct printing of barcoding, production, batch, identification, paper type, grammage, unwind direction, weight and tracking data around the centre of the upright wrapped paper or board reel.

"Other information on A3 size labels can be placed at the reel ends using the Domino M-Series print-and-apply equipment and thus reels can be clearly identified from every direction," added Michel. "For paper producers exporting reels, clear identification is most important as reels on which bar codes cannot be read are usually rejected at the docks."

The C-Series Plus produces high resolution codes and graphics and has a DOD (deliver on demand) large volume gravity-fed ink system with a reservoir that can be changed without halting production for increased efficiency and reduced costs.

Michel said today's paper producers, along with most other manufacturing industries, are most conscious of the possible environmental impacts of their operations. "There is a trend now to also print information such as the tree species used, the country of origin and environmental certification, such as that provided by the international Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), on the final product."

The Plus versions of the Domino C-Series offer new features that help manufacturers achieve increased production efficiency. They are easier to use and apply and meet market needs for robust and dependable solutions that improve overall equipment effectiveness and availability in even the harshest environments.

New networking features in the Plus models, including access to a built-in Web server using a standard Internet browser, deliver remote management capabilities for monitoring areas such as message selection, system status, alerts and alarms, ink levels, production counts and service due dates.

Ethernet communication is standard, offering greater control as printers can be networked locally or enterprise wide. Such network connectivity improves efficiency by sending e-mail alerts to operators for instant notification of line stoppages or advance warning of service dates to avoid unplanned downtime.
