Square One Power Solutions, the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) specialist in the JSE-listed Square One Solutions Group, has installed and commissioned a 40kW UPS solution in support of a new data centre for the PG group located at subsidiary company PFG Building Glass, the Springs-based float glass manufacturer.
The UPS solution, based upon a 40kW APC Silcon unit, has a dual power supply and is linked to a 100kVA standby generator set, ensuring that the critical electrical load to the data centre is maintained in the event of a mains power failure or voltage variances (sags or spikes).
PFG electrical engineer, Richard Kumalo, said the company's previous experience with a 720kW UPS solution comprising three 240kW Silcon units configured in parallel redundancy to ensure that critical electrical loads to the float glass production line were maintained under all circumstances, had led PFG to again approach Square One Power for a solution.
"We have confidence in the Silcon UPS equipment and in the design, engineering, maintenance and support services we receive from Square One Power. The solution they came up with also allows for the addition of a further 40kW Silcon system in a parallel redundancy configuration which caters for future data centre expansion."
The recently commissioned data centre UPS solution includes an external power bypass system that ensures the load is maintained in the event that the UPS unit is taken offline for adjustment or servicing. The battery back-up set is capable of supporting the data centre at full load for 10 minutes, for additional security.
In normal circumstances, when a mains power failure occurs the UPS carries the full load from the battery back-up set until such time as the standby generator set starts and replaces the full load to the UPS.
Square One Power Solutions managing director Neil Burnard said the Silcon UPS units are extremely efficient with very high input power factors and low input distortion. "This leads to lower running costs and the units are also 'diesel-friendly' requiring much less power from the standby diesel generator sets compared to conventional units."
He added that the Delta conversion online technology of the Silcon units realises bottom line benefits for users through reduced installation, wiring, air conditioning, harmonic distortion and maintenance costs as well as lower energy consumption.
