Mac systems, too long perceived as overly expensive for the home user and with little local support, have received a shot in the arm with the introduction of the iMac range distributed by Siltek Distribution Dynamics (SDD), member of the JSE-listed Siltek group of companies. The iMac range comes in at a far lower price point than the PowerMac range which is aimed at the professional market, while retaining the video editing, graphic manipulation, multimedia Internet and games capabilities required by the consumer market.
"We're giving the iMac desktop and iBook notebooks a big push into the local market, starting with a special being run at the Computer Faire comprising a bundled blueberry iMac and blueberry Epson printer at a reduced price," says Laetitia van den Berg, product manager at SDD.
"Digital video camera's are constantly being reduced in price and becoming more accessible to the consumer while multimedia Internet content creation technologies are being proliferated, thus putting more multimedia on the Web than ever before. 3D technology use in computer gaming is also on the increase, delivering high quality graphics to the monitor. The consumer is looking for a machine that can handle all of these aspects without the need to upgrade and buy additional cards, adding to the overall cost of the machine," says van den Berg.
"Owning an iMac DV model is like owning your own mini movie theatre and studio rolled into one - you can watch a DVD movie or create your own with the iMovie digital video editing software," says van den Berg. With a built-in modem this machine can connect users to the Internet to create, or browse Web sites, and a 10/100 network card allows for setting up a network between two or more iMac's and PCs.
"Both the iMac and iBook come with the stable and reliable MAC OS9 operating system," she says .
The same features apply to the iBook notebook version of the iMac. Driven by a 300MHz processor with 64MB RAM and 4MB ATI RAGE Mobility SDRAM video memory with a six gigabyte hard drive, the iBook is more than adequately equipped to handle 2D and 3D static graphics, video and games.
