Staffware ranked No.1 in Research & Development amongst leading UK software companies in latest UK government study

Johannesburg, 27 Oct 2000

Staffware has confirmed its position as a leading company in this year`s DTI R&D scoreboard which examined company and R&D investment for the 576 UK and 300 international top R&D investing companies. For UK IT/software companies with annual sales of over lb25 million, Staffware was shown to have the highest R&D investment as a percentage of sales (R&D intensity). The figure of 17.1 per cent for Staffware was 38% higher than the global IT sector average of 12.4 per cent and 350% higher than the UK IT sector average of 3.8%.

John O` Connell, Chairman and CEO of Staffware said: "A strong research and development program is vital to the competitiveness and future success of our business. The data from this study reflects our commitment to R&D investment which is helping us to innovate with new products and identify new business opportunities. It is a key driver in our substantial growth, representing approx lb21,000 of R&D behind every commercial employee in our group."

Staffware for the period of the Study had two Development Centers - in Swindon UK and Spokane in Washington State in the US. Since then it has added a third - in Arlington near Texas. In its latest reports for the first half of year 2000, Staffware stated it had further increased its R&D investment - by 30%, as part of its continuing commitment to product innovation and availability on the widest range of computing hardware and software systems of any product of its type.

Analysis from the DTI study coupled with academic research both suggest a positive link between reported R&D investment and business performance, providing important indicators as to a company`s health and competitive advantage. For instance:

  • Sales growth

Staffware has achieved 152% sales growth over the study period, which compares with the norm identified by the DTI of 40% for high R&D investment companies. Since then Staffware`s growth has risen to 210%.

  • Market value growth

Since its listing on the UK Stock Market in June 1996, Staffware`s market value has risen by 866% - much faster than the study`s average for a portfolio of high R&D intensity companies.

The study, released in September 2000, examined company data and R&D investment for the 576 UK and 300 international top R&D investing companies. On sales of just over lb25 million in 1999, Staffware invested lb4.28 million on research and development giving it an R&D intensity of 17.1%. This gives it a ranking of 7th overall for profitable UK IT/Software companies and a ranking of 1st for larger UK IT/Software companies-with sales exceeding lb25 million.
