Staffware to support new Workflow Management Coalition interoperability standard

Johannesburg, 24 Aug 2001

Staffware, a provider of business process automation applications, has announced that it is now shipping full support for the WfXML interoperability standard of the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC), the international non-profit organisation of workflow vendors, customers and consultants.

The new revised interoperability standard - known as Interface 4 - is designed to enable workflow engine products from differing vendors and suppliers to interoperate with one another. In practice, automated business processes initiated in one workflow engine can be fully or partly completed within another. Two or more engines can also receive status updates as the other engine executes its part of the process.

This latest version of Interface 4, uses XML for data exchange and transmission. This new variant is available as part of the Staffware Developer`s Kit or SDK.

Staffware has undertaken extensive testing on the Interface standard, in collaboration with SAP and its workflow application.

Mark Ehmke, managing director of Staffware SA and local chair for the WfMC, says: "The interoperability standard (Interface 4) is a key component of the WfMCs standards set. By providing a consistent method of interfacing between disparate workflow engines, organisations will be able to simply and effectively implement business-to-business process integration as well as maximising their existing investment in BP technology and legacy applications. There is no doubt that take up of this standard will enhance the availability, quality and timeliness of management information regardless of location and technology deployed."

Workflow Management Coalition

Founded in 1993, the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC) is an international non-profit organisation of workflow vendors, consultants and customers whose sole mission is to promote the use of workflow through the establishment of standards for software terminology, interoperability and connectivity between workflow products.

Consisting of more than 180 members in 25 countries, the coalition has quickly become established as the primary standards body for this rapidly expanding software market. In November 1995, the coalition published its workflow application programming interface (Interface 2) specification designed to give users increased flexibility in implementing standards based workflow systems.

In November 1996, the coalition also published its workflow interoperability specification (Interface 4) designed to ensure that businesses can exchange and process work from two or more workflow engines.
