Standard Bank introduces mobile palm top ATM

Standard Bank has again demonstrated its cellphone banking leadership with the launch of two additional services on its Cellphone Banking platform.

Standard Bank becomes the first bank in South Africa to enable customers to top-up prepaid airtime directly with their cellphone from any of their Standard Bank bank accounts. This service is currently available only for Vodago customers.

Access to the service is free, there is no monthly subscription fee and with wireless internet gateway (WIG) Cellphone Banking the customer avoids the cost of a call. This complements the existing interactive voice response (IVR) and ATM airtime top up facility.

Standard Bank has simultaneously launched Pay your way, a person-to-person mobile payment solution enabling any phone to be used to make immediate ad hoc payments. Customers are not required to pre-load the payee as a beneficiary. This service provides a customer the convenience of initiating a payment to another Standard Bank customer immediately without having to go to a branch. This complements and augments the bank's physical cheque offering.

"We believe that these two applications, which are core to both our wireless application protocol (WAP) and wireless internet gate (WIG) Cellphone Banking facilities, are the 'holy grail' of the mobile commerce environment and present us with tremendous growth potential both here and in the rest of Africa," says Herman Singh, Director, Direct Channels at Standard Bank.

Standard Bank can now claim to have the most function rich cellphone banking service on the continent. "We are effectively turning more than 3,5 million cellphones owned by our customers into palm-top AutoPlus ATMs. This provides our customers with unrivalled convenience, choice and availability in simplifying their access to financial services," says Singh.
