StorageTek, HP in OEM deal

Johannesburg, 29 Nov 1999

StorageTek has announced an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) arrangement with Hewlett-Packard for StorageTek`s new-generation 9840 tape technology.

This arrangement builds on a December 1997 worldwide relationship under which HP became a strategic supplier for StorageTek`s 97xx family of tape libraries, including 9710, 9714 and 9730, targeted at open systems environments.

StorageTek`s 9840 tape drive spans the enterprise from MVS to Unix and Windows NT. When combined with StorageTek`s 9710, also sold as the HP SureStore Tape Library 10/588, 9840 technology delivers a tightly integrated solution for HP/9000 Enterprise Server customers, making crucial secure and highly available.

"StorageTek`s 9840 tape drive has raised the bar for access-intensive environments, from horizontal applications such as data warehousing to emerging vertical markets," says Dan McMahon of local distributor CMS, a company in the MGX Holdings group.

The 9840 is a key technology in the physical storage layer of StorageTek`s Virtual Intelligent Storage Architecture (Vista), an open standards, building-block approach that enables customers to choose the components to complete a standard storage framework."
