StorageTek transforms disaster recovery with advanced laser technology

Johannesburg, 15 Nov 1999

CMS, local StorageTek distributor has announced that cutting-edge laser technology used by the telecommunications industry has now been integrated with StorageTek`s Channel StorageNet Access Hub, enabling companies to remotely store and recover critical up to 30 miles from the original source. This extends the reach of native Fibre Channel by nearly five times the previous distance, allowing customers to better plan for business resumption in the event of or server outages.

Fibre Channel SANs, which alleviate front-end network congestion from enterprise backup tasks, have become paramount in quick business resumption and disaster recovery for many companies, especially those relying on the Internet for around-the-clock service. Borrowing technology from the telecommunications industry, the Access Hub integrates Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) laser technology to extend its distance capabilities.

"StorageTek is driving SAN innovation for our customers and the industry alike," says Pieter Engelbrecht, sales support manager at CMS. "It is StorageTek`s dedication to delivering `open, intelligent, and integrated` SAN technology that results in workable solutions, like the StorageNet Access Hub, that solves real-world business problems."

StorageTek`s Access Hub is the world`s first and only multiple-loop Fibre Channel hub specifically engineered for building scalable and integrated SANs. The Access Hub "opens up" multiple connections between servers and storage allowing a free flow of information void of data bottlenecks. As a centralised point of connection between servers and storage devices on a SAN, the Access Hub dynamically establishes high-speed connections, as needed, to efficiently and automatically allocate storage resources.

StorageTek`s Access Hub also responds to calls from StorageTek`s REEL software, and dynamically configures the SAN to optimise and manage server-to-storage and storage-to-storage data movement. StorageTek`s REEL is the only software product that takes advantage of StorageNet Access Hub`s dynamic switching capability.

Additionally, the Access Hub has been certified with Hewlett-Packard`s OpenView system-management software for centralised management of both server and SAN components. This certification simplifies storage management through a graphical tool already in place at many corporations extending a single point of management for all components in the SAN. As such, businesses better utilise employee resources and further reduce storage management costs.

StorageTek`s Access Hub supports StorageTek`s multi-layer Virtual Intelligent Storage Architecture (VISTA) framework, which promotes an information-centric approach for sharing information across any server, operating system, application and storage device. The net result for customers is a lower cost of ownership and improved utilisation of resources.
