Storm at Home plays fast and loose with dial-up access

Johannesburg, 15 Mar 2005

Storm at Home has launched Storm Compressor, a technology that consistently increases traditional dial-up surfing speeds into the 100k per second range, making Storm at Home the fastest dial-up access service provider in the country.

The benefits of the Storm Compressor include that customers do not have to download the software to their computers as it sits on Storm's network and the application works directly on the data itself, which means the quality of the Web pages and pictures is not compromised.

Toby Jermyn, marketing director at Storm at Home, says: "SA is well behind the rest of the world when it comes to the amount of bandwidth available to the average Internet user. As a result, we have had to develop systems which make the best of what is available.

"The reason surfing speeds are so poor is because of the bottleneck that exists between the ISP and the end-user - the last mile as it is known. The Storm Compressor takes the data received from the World Wide Web at the ISP's POP and compresses it for easier transmission over the 'last mile'. When the data - or Web page - arrives at the client, it is uncompressed in the browser automatically and returned to its intended state."

There is other software available that accelerates the transmission of data over the "last mile" but it does so by degrading the content to allow faster transmission speeds. For example, a good quality 200k picture can be degraded by up to three times to enable the picture to be transmitted three times faster.

"The problem here is that the picture quality is 30% of its intended quality - and nobody wants to download fuzzy pics. With the Storm Compressor, the picture is transmitted up to four times faster and with absolutely no picture degradation," says Jermyn.

Storm at Home is so confident it is the fastest dial-up access ISP in the country that it is offering a one-month free trial of is Connect15, which provides customers with Internet access between 18h00 and 09h00 Monday to Friday and all through the weekend.

"The proof is in the pudding," says Jermyn. "This will give people a completely risk-free opportunity to compare our service with that of their existing provider. I am sure that for most people it will take much less than a month to know that Storm really is the best ISP to be with."

Storm at Home

Internet and data service provider Storm launched its consumer Internet access division Storm at Home in July 2004. It was launched to fill the gap in the market for fast, reliable, simple Internet access that was not encumbered by content-driven portals designed to show people how to use the Internet. The division was launched with two access products, Connect15, which provides customers with access between 18h00 and 09h00 Monday to Friday and all through the weekend, and Connect24 which offers 24 hours a day Internet access.
