Sumitomo Mitsui gets easy-access banking with Unisys ES7000 servers

Johannesburg, 05 Jun 2002

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Japan`s second largest bank, has installed six Unisys Enterprise Server ES7000 servers to provide a gateway for its national interbanking cash management system.

The bank taps the power and capacity of multiple ES7000 servers running Windows 2000 Datacenter Server and SQL Server 2000 to track and record up to 6 000 automated teller machine (ATM) transactions per minute.

The Unisys ES7000 servers support a gateway for message switching and transaction processing between Sumitomo Mitsui`s bank cash service centre and its mainframe systems. To ensure uninterrupted access for customers, the solution must deliver 99.999% availability and cluster failover within one minute.

"For our bank to integrate information systems and meet the increase in customer demand, we needed a highly stable and scalable architecture to consolidate our network and support our clients` daily ATM activity," says Masashige Shirataki, vice president of system development, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. "The ES7000 fulfils these needs by seamlessly unifying our cash management system and monitoring a high-volume of ATM transactions with exceptional reliability and ease."

In addition to simplifying administrative procedures for the bank, the ES7000 servers track and record the ATM activity of its clients.

Sumitomo Mitsui faced complex integration issues resulting from the merger of the Sumitomo and Sakura banks, both large corporate entities. With a need to consolidate two disparate ATM networks, the newly enlarged bank required a flexible and accessible platform to provide a gateway between the two sources so that it could share information and resources productively. By accessing the power and availability of the ES7000 server, Sumitomo Mitsui now manages its extensive ATM business from one, centrally controlled source.

Sumitomo Mitsui has installed two ES7000 servers in its Tokyo centre and two in its Osaka centre. These servers integrate the bank`s interbanking cash management system and track ATM activity. In each centre, one server provides backup for the other machine. The Tokyo and Osaka centres, located 300 miles apart, provide disaster recovery backing for each other. Also, the Tokyo centre uses an additional two ES7000s for test and development purposes.

"The high availability of the Unisys ES7000 server provides Sumitomo Mitsui with round-the-clock access to critical data to maintain connectivity and consistency throughout its network," says Allan Currie, director of the systems and technology division at Unisys Africa. "In addition to having strong transaction processing capabilities, the ES7000 offers superior system administration benefits to allow for simplified management in complex, integrated computing infrastructures."
