Sun Microsystems' recent appointment of NCR Ghana as its channel reseller partner for Ghana has significantly strengthened the global vendor's reach in a country where the financial services sector is rapidly expanding.
Comments Ben Neveling, sales manager for Africa at Sun Microsystems SA: "NCR Ghana was the obvious choice as they offer a solid level of expertise, especially in the financial services sector, and a strong infrastructure, all required in an untapped market such as Ghana."
NCR Ghana is a subsidiary of NCR Corporation, one of the world's leading providers of relationship technology solutions. The company is the only supplier of ATMs in Ghana and provides 65% of all IT solutions to the banking industry.
"Sun enables us to offer a strong product line that is ideally suited for the IT industry in Ghana. Due to their dominance in the server market we can offer our customers high-performance Sun servers for mission-critical 24-hour environments," comments Moses Tetteh, managing director of NCR Ghana.
Sun and NCR Ghana's recent successes include developing solutions for key banks in Ghana - all to fulfil their critical IT needs. In order to reduce the initial financial burden placed on the banks, NCR Ghana together with Sun pre-financed the projects.
"We have a good track record with these banks and we're regarded by them as a business partner - which is definitely a feather in our cap," says Tetteh.
The IT industry in Ghana is still going through the initial growing pains of a developing country and, as Tetteh explains, Ghana is essentially at the stage where only the critical areas such as the banking industry are getting IT attention.
"Our banks for example, have implemented banking software to service their clients. But unfortunately, daily operations such as management and decision making are not yet supported by proper IT support infrastructures."
With strong reseller partners such as NCR Ghana, Sun is indeed focused on providing leading solutions to a continent that is seeing rapid development in its financial services and telecommunications markets.
