Showcasing its position as an ideal platform for the most demanding data mart applications, Sun Microsystems announced two benchmark results for Oracle`s data mart and on-line analytical processing (OLAP) applications.
The Sun system posted world-record results for the Analytical Processing Benchmark-1 (APB-1) and outstanding performance for Oracle8 on the Transaction Processing Performance Council benchmark D (TPC-D) at 100 GB (SF 100). Together the two benchmark results demonstrate that Sun and Oracle offer powerful solutions for data mart applications.

With data marts, departmental and regional managers can leverage corporate data to drive business-critical decisions -- as all levels of the organisation are empowered for more effective analysis and decisions.
Demonstrating fast calculation, intensive analysis and query processing power that companies need for competitive advantage, the Sun Enterprise 450 workgroup server, featuring four high-performance UltraSPARC processors and running the powerful Solaris operating environment, together with the Sun StorEdge A1000 disk arrays demonstrated on the APB-1 benchmark the fastest query performance of any OLAP server on any platform.
The TPC-D benchmark at 100GB also posted power metric results that surpassed the best numbers achieved by all four OR all six processor PC-based single system running Microsoft Windows NT and Oracle8.0.4 -- by up to 36 percent.
The TPC-D results also reinforced Sun`s position as the most scalable platform for Oracle databases and data warehouses -- with strong results at 100GB scale factor on the Enterprise 450 server and up to a 1TB scale factor on the Enterprise 10000 system, also known as Starfire.
