Sun Microsystems has announced an aggressive campaign that will enable companies to migrate effortlessly from Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) to its iPlanet Web Server.
This announcement follows shortly after Gartner's well published report recommending that enterprises hit by both the Code Red and Nimda worms immediately replace their Microsoft IIS software with more secure server applications such as iPlanet.*
This campaign will enable current Microsoft IIS customers to easily trade-up to iPlanet Web Server Enterprise Edition 6.0. The trade-up, available at www.iplanet.com/gosecure, includes detailed migration guides and a 37% price reduction on iPlanet software.
Says Stefano Mattiello, managing director at Sun Microsystems SA: "iPlanet is an extremely viable option as security is a top priority for all products in the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) portfolio.
"Migrating to iPlanet will help companies minimise security threats, enabling them to protect valuable investments and at the same time save on total cost of ownership (TOC)."
He also emphasises that the move underscores Sun's ongoing commitment towards its customers, providing them with a secure environment protected from crippling threats such as Code Red and Nimda.
The Gartner report states that although all Web server products have required some security patches, alternatives such as iPlanet have much better security records and are not under active attack by the vast number of virus and worm writers.
Mattiello also points out that Sun keeps on upgrading its software, which enables the vendor to weed out potential security threats. "Unlike other vendors, we build cars with steering wheels and don't expect third-parties to look after our security issues."
In addition, the trade-up includes free Sun Chili!Soft ASP software that allows companies to run Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP) code unchanged on the iPlanet software. The software acts as server-side scripting and runtime environment for the cross platform deployment of ASP Web sites and Web applications.
"Although Sun technologies aren't immune to virus and other security onslaughts, we are clearly offering the industry a more secure and cost-effective alternative," concludes Mattiello.
