Nigeria could easily be described as the 'land of IT opportunity'. Few other countries on the African continent have shown such an enormous adoption of technology.
Sun Microsystems, one of the leading providers of IT infrastructure in Africa, has recently recorded a 100% growth rate for 2000/2001 in Nigeria. Added to this, the company's recent appointment of Computer Warehouse Group Limited (CWL) as a channel development partner has strategically strengthened Sun's position in Nigeria.
Ben Neveling, sales manager for Africa at Sun Microsystems SA, comments that, over the past two years, the IT industry in Nigeria has shown significant growth. "Nigeria is an extremely viable yet demanding market. Our appointment of CWL, a multinational company, will therefore enable us to keep up with the growing demand for IT solutions in the country."
As a result of Sun's growth in Nigeria, the company is to open a regional support centre in the country. Sun's Channel Development Provider (CDP) partner, cdpAfrica, will operate the centre, providing technical support services to Sun customers through its channel partners.
"The support centre will allow Sun's channel partners to actively focus on the sale and promotion of Sun technologies, while cdpAfrica provides the necessary support," comments Austin Okere, managing director of CWL. "The centre is yet another achievement in Nigeria's IT drive."
Sun is involved in all the major sectors of the Nigerian economy, namely finance, telecommunications and government, conducting business exclusively through channel partners such as CWL. "Already CWL has proven their commitment and enthusiasm by landing a major telco deal for Sun - this spells great things for our future relationship," concludes Neveling.
