Sun Microsystems and Dell will co-operate on system certification and the development of offerings based on Solaris and Dell solutions, said Dell`s chairman and CEO Michael Dell.
Sun and Dell recently signed an original equipment manufacturer agreement for Dell to make the Solaris operating system (OS) and support services available directly to customers.
During his keynote address, at Oracle OpenWorld, in San Francisco, Sun president and CEO Jonathan Schwartz said the company discovered that one-third of its Solaris users were running Dell systems. "With Dell being a leader in virtualisation, and being able to provide better support for Solaris, the partnership made sense."
He added that Sun chooses partners with the most capacity to influence the marketplace, thereby giving customers a wider choice.
According to Schwartz, through this distribution agreement, Dell will expand the range of enterprise-class operating systems it offers to its customers, and Sun will expand the reach of its Solaris OS.
"Part of our focus to simplify IT means delivering customers` choice, and by adding Solaris to our solutions set, we are able to do that," agreed Dell.
