Sun fulfils promise
Sun Microsystems has released a fully buildable Java Development Kit (JDK) version for Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE) to the OpenJDK Community, as free software under the GNU General Public Licence version two (GPLv2), according to Media Newswire.
The company also announced the Interim Governing Board for the OpenJDK community.
It said OpenJDK-based implementations can use the Java SE 6 Technical Compatibility Kit (JCK) to establish compatibility with the Java SE 6 specification.
ARM expands Sun partnership
ARM says Sun Microsystems, a member of the ARM Connected Community, has licensed its Java and graphics acceleration as a part of Sun's recent acquisition of the assets of SavaJE Technologies, according to WebWire.
The planned acquisition further expands Sun's partnership with ARM and will enable the company to use ARM technology to deliver vertical solutions targeted for high-performance multimedia and converged devices.
Under the agreement, ARM has transferred its Java and graphics licences from SavaJE to Sun, which will include the ARM Swerve Client software, and ARM Jazelle Java Technology Enabling Kit (JTEK).
Sun boosts
Sun Microsystems has announced a wider access to the Unified Testing Initiative (UTI) digital security certificate for installation in Java technology-based mobile and embedded handsets, according to Media Newswire.
With the release of this digital security certificate, non-UTI member companies can run Java Verified signed applications on their mobile phones, resulting in more end-users benefiting from the availability of consumer friendly, quality-tested, traceable content from third party developers.
In addition to the security aspects, signing applications with the UTI certificate greatly enhances the consumer experience by providing easier access to identified third party access rights with fewer prompts.
