Sun Microsystems grew its worldwide Unix server leadership position in the second quarter of 2003 (Q203), and increased its share of the overall worldwide server market (including servers running all types of operating systems), according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker.
Sun's Unix server revenues accounted for 33% of all Unix server factory revenues during the second quarter, ended 30 June 2003. In addition, Sun gained 1.6 points of market share and leads its nearest competitor, HP, in terms of Unix server factory revenue during Q203.
Sun now holds 13.5% share of worldwide factory revenues for servers, compared with a 12.8% in the previous quarter.
In SA, the latest BMI-TechKnowledge survey indicates that Sun has once again dominated the volume Unix server and systems market too. This makes Sun the undisputed leader in the South African Unix market in terms of unit sales and revenue generation.
"This is a noteworthy achievement considering the tough conditions we trade under in SA and the reduced IT spending trends," says Stefano Mattiello, regional director for Sun's sub-Saharan Africa region.
"With these share gains customers have sent a clear signal that the innovation, choice and value that Sun delivers matters to them," he adds.
Comments Mark Tolliver, chief strategy officer and executive vice president for marketing and strategy at Sun Microsystems: "In the last quarter we continued to deliver servers with superior price/performance based on industry-leading Sparc and Solaris. We also offered more choice to our customers with systems based on Solaris for x86, Linux, and x86. This strategy is clearly the one customers want.
"At Sun Network - from 16 September to 18 September 2003 - we will make a series of breakthrough announcements that will further our competitive-edge while dramatically reducing our customers' cost and complexity," adds Tolliver.
Additional Sun highlights from the IDC report include:
- Sun gained market share in Unix server revenue in two key server market segments defined by IDC in its Server Taxonomy: Volume (servers priced less than $25 000) and High-end Enterprise (servers priced at $500 000, or more).
- Sun once again asserted its Unix server unit shipment leadership worldwide, with a leadership position of 42.8% of all Unix server shipments during Q203, more than twice the number of units shipped by IBM during the quarter.
- Sun remained the number one vendor in Unix server shipments across all major geographic regions tracked by IDC (US, Western Europe, Japan, Asia/Pacific, Canada and Rest of World).
Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision -- "The Network Is The Computer" -- has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc (Nasdaq: SUNW) to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that make the Net work.
