Sun Microsystems and Infosys Technologies today announced that they will jointly market their new generation technology e-platform, designed for enterprise banking and transaction-intensive network computing requirements, in SA.
While the banking industry in SA is mature and compares with some of the best in the world, it nevertheless is characterised by legacy systems and inflexible and expensive to maintain IT platforms.
According to Jan Dry, regional solutions manager at Sun Microsystems SA, this situation makes SA a market ripe for a proven, integrated platform such as the joint Sun and Infosys offering.
Sun announced its alliance with Infosys in November 2002. Under the terms of the agreement, Sun's platforms and technologies will power Infosys' Finacle - Enterprise Banking E-platform suite of software banking solutions, including Core Banking, Treasury, eChannels, eCorporate and CRM. By supporting powerful and unique features like 24x7 banking, straight through processing (STP), workflow automation, personalised and consistent multi-channel customer experience and unified customer view, Infosys and Sun are addressing the requirements of modern banking systems.
Since the November 2002 announcement, Sun and Infosys have also announced a reference architecture for a New Generation Retail Banking Technology Platform.
According to Venkatramana Gosavi, regional manager, SA, Banking Business Unit, Infosys Technologies, "Finacle e-platform has had great success in the region and Infosys has built an impeccable implementation track record in African banks.
"We believe this alliance will help us accelerate our momentum and further consolidate our market share in this region. SA is a key focus region for the alliance and we believe our new generation enterprise-banking platform is ideally suited to provide South African banks with a powerful and flexible platform to reduce costs and gain business agility."
"There is an increasing move towards the adoption of pre-built systems for specific vertical markets. This allows tested and approved solutions to go into production with a shorter implementation cycle, thereby speeding the return on investment for the client, and greatly reducing the risk of technology selection," says Jan Dry, Regional Solutions Manager at Sun Microsystems South Africa.
"By combining forces, Sun and Infosys aim to offer banking customers an agile, scalable, proven solution that lowers total cost of ownership and accelerates time to market," Dry concludes.
Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision - "The Network Is The Computer" - has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc (Nasdaq: SUNW) to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that make the Net work.
