The fourth annual Sun Microsystems Marathon of Golf, to be held at Atlantic Beach Country Club in Cape Town on 10 November, is once again challenging South African companies to take a day off from work to help raise funds for a worthy cause.
The golf challenge with a difference tests the endurance of 88 golfers, who must complete three rounds of golf in a single day: between sun-up and sundown, participants must wield their clubs for a total of 54 holes on the picturesque course.
"The Marathon of Golf is an initiative devised by Sun Microsystems to raise funds for charity and give our corporate partners a unique golf day," says Andre Muzerie, Sun Microsystems' regional manager for the coast.
The Marathon of Golf is run in conjunction with Pinelands Round Table 116, which is partnering with Sun for the third time for this year's event.
Kevin Knight, PR and marketing officer for the Pinelands Round Table 116, says the proceeds from this year's event will go to the Foundation for a Brighter Future founded by Cape Town businessman Chris Drummond and cricket star Gary Kirsten.
The organisation is committed to helping to develop disadvantaged children and youths into self-sustainable adults for the benefit of South African society.
"Our 2002 marathon raised an incredible R73 000. The funds were donated to the Etafeni Playschool for Aids orphans in conjunction with Lifeline/Childline," Knight adds.
He anticipates that this year's event will raise over R100 000.
Originating in the US, the event now takes place in various European countries and SA, and has been growing in prestige each year.
