Sun Microsystems focuses on Africa with continent's first sun technical development centre in Middle East Africa (MEA)

Johannesburg, 13 Sep 2000

In a move to enhance the technology capabilities of emerging markets and ensure global consistency in service delivery, e-business enabler Sun Microsystems has established the first technical development centre for Sun resellers in the Middle East Africa (MEA) region.

This is line with Sun's stated objective of investing in the region as a future growth area. The Midrand Technical Development Centre (TDC) will focus primarily on developing the post sales technical capabilities of Sun resellers in emerging markets.

"We looked at how the IT industry is shaping the future of the region and realised we needed a quantum leap in developing services if we are to match the lead that Sun products have in today's e-commerce world," explains Brian Perrins, regional manager support services, Sun Microsystems Middle East and Africa (MEA).

"Initially we are setting targets to develop the technical capabilities of our indirect partners to install and maintain Sun products," says Perrins, "Sun has a structured Sun ServicePro (SSP) programme that supports this and also allows for training funding."

Datacentre uptime and applications availability are crucial for businesses in the New Economy. Today, support is no longer a case of fixing a problem that has already happened but about proactively preventing downtime.

"As a technology vendor, we have a responsibility to ensure organisations get the most productivity from our systems and the best way of achieving this is to develop the diagnostic and repair capabilities of the sales channel in the field.

"This is the motivation behind the establishment of the new TDC near our Johannesburg office," says Perrins. "The centre will also be used to assist in training up our partners in emerging markets such as Morocco, Kenya, Pakistan and Nigeria."
