Sun Microsystems` JavaStation network computer was selected for a 1998 Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) by the Industrial Society of America (IDSA). Out of a record-breaking 1,031 entries, Sun`s JavaStation network computer was one of only 33 designs to receive the prestigious Gold Award. "The JavaStation marks a profoundly significant, but necessary departure from Sun`s industrial design and product line strategy," said Steve Goodrich, IDSA jury member. "To consciously migrate from the traditional solid, reliable and geometric forms of typical computer design to the curvaceous and subtle forms of the JavaStation requires innovation, aggressiveness, intuition and commitment. Sun delivered on that commitment and executed a near-flawless implementation of its diversified product design strategy." IDEAs are awarded in 9 categories to companies throughout the world, ranging from computers and cars to museum exhibits and furniture. A panel of 13 jurors is selected from various industries to judge each entry on fulfilling five essential design criteria: design innovation, benefit to the user, benefit to the client/business, ecological responsibility and appropriate aesthetics and appeal. Sun`s JavaStation network computer received design recognition in the business and industrial products category. In winning the IDEA Gold Award, Sun joins the ranks of such previous winners as NCR, Black & Decker, Samsung Electronics, Chrysler and IBM.
