Sun ONE application server enhanced for increased Web services deployment

Johannesburg, 13 Nov 2002

Building on the company's Web services momentum, Sun Microsystems has added new features to its recently introduced Sun ONE (Open Net Environment) Application Server 7.

The server now features the first complete product implementation of J2EE version 1.3 and the Java WDSP toolset. Through Java WSDP, developers can build, test and deploy XML applications, Web applications and Web services. This will also enable them to provide Java standard implementations for WSDL, SOAP, ebXML and UDDI - all Web services standards.

Application Server 7 is also tightly integrated with the new Sun ONE Studio for Java, Enterprise Edition 4.1 IDE (integrated development environment) set of Web services tools.

"Together with the pre-built components of the Sun ONE Application Framework 2.0, Java Enterprise Edition 4.1 will dramatically streamline the development of Java Web services and increase developer productivity," comments Lodewyk de Beer, consultant SEAME (South Europe Middle East Africa) Architecture Strategy Team at Sun Microsystems SA.

The Sun ONE Application Server 7 - released in June - has already seen significant adoption as the core version (Platform Edition) is free for enterprises and independent software vendors (ISVs).

Research authority IDC says: "Sun's move to provide the core version of application server free on all major platforms has the potential to shake up the competitive landscape."

Supporting all leading platforms, including Solaris, Linux, HP-UX and AIX, the Sun ONE Application Server 7 - previously iPlanet Application Server- makes it easier than ever for customers and developers to select Java as their Web services platform of choice.

By removing the cost barrier through the Platform Edition version (the core version), Sun is enabling companies to choose the technology that is best suited for the extreme performance and scalability requirements of enterprise deployments.

Companies will also be able to seamlessly upgrade from the Platform Edition to the new Standards and Enterprise Editions, at a moderate additional cost. Says De Beer: "The free version of the Sun ONE Application Server 7 makes it more economical for enterprises to utilise the full power of J2EE in order to host applications and Web services in locations where cost was previously prohibitive."

The core Platform Edition is integrated into the Solaris 9 Operating Environment (OE) and available for free download on Solaris and Windows at http://wwws.sun.com/software/download/app_servers.html.
