Sun, PeopleSoft increase customer security, efficiencies

Johannesburg, 17 Oct 2002

Sun Microsystems and PeopleSoft are integrating their technologies to provide an open and secure end-to-end federated identity management system controlled through a single sign-on.

The move is part of their global alliance strategy in which the companies are integrating the Sun ONE Identity Server 6.0 with PeopleSoft 8 Human Capital Management.

Daryl Blundell, enterprise sales manager at Sun Microsystems SA, says it has always been Sun's policy to work with its partners to take value-added solutions to market.

"The alliance with PeopleSoft in the security space is an additional step in an ongoing process of co-developing solutions required by the market. Our non-conflict approach with partners has shown that we are quickly becoming a preferred partner by the ISV (independent software vendor) and SI (systems integrator) community."

He adds that Sun will shortly announce its South African strategy for the solutions that have been developed with PeopleSoft in SA.

Essentially the integration of the two systems provides network-based identity solutions to help enterprises manage and control their most vital assets - identities. It addresses customers' needs for streamlined access and privacy.

Unlike proprietary network identity management offerings, the Sun ONE Identity Server 6.0 provides an open and comprehensive network identity management solution - including directory, policy and certificate management services - to eliminate the time, expense and headaches associated with a multi-vendor approach.

The Sun ONE Identity Server further decreases costs while simplifying the creation, administration and management of the authentication and authorisation policies and services associated with single sign-on.

PeopleSoft's integrated best-of-breed application solutions cover areas such as human capital management, customer relationship management (CRM), financial management, supply chain management and the AppConnect suite of products designed to ease application integration.

"This integration helps enable the real-time enterprise for our customers through Liberty-enabled federated identity management, allowing them to realise the efficiencies to be gained through single sign-on," says Renee Knee, general manager of strategic alliances, PeopleSoft.

"As an associate member of the Liberty Alliance, we believe in an open standards approach, and Sun is clearly among the leaders in this regard."
